Families Evicted From Canal as Part of Clean-Up
Three families were evicted and their houses torn down by authorities in Phnom Penh’s Meanchey district yesterday after officials claimed that residents there were polluting a canal with rubbish. The authorities last week warned that families living inside 38 houses in Niroth commune were illegally occupying the land and that they would have to move so that the canal could be cleaned. … Mr. Chan Leang [deputy district governor] said villagers would be allowed to rebuild their homes in the same locations after the clean-up, but could not promise that they would be allowed to stay long-term. He also said he was unaware when the remaining homes in the area would be destroyed. …
